About the Artist

I have enjoyed drawing, painting and photography since childhood. I took one drawing class in college, the rest has been self-taught.

Meeting Jane Goodall and having her select my drawing of a zebra to hang in her office was one of my greatest artistic accomplishments. Other accomplishments include published scientific illustrations for insect research and a variety of commissioned drawings and paintings.

Inspiration comes from studying the natural world, focusing on insects, wildlife, plants, and marine animals. I love the process of creating; slowing down to fully examine a subject and render it in a way that respects its existence and does justice to its inherent beauty.

I am a recently retired professor of entomology and insect pest management in the Plant Sciences Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  My retirement plan is to have a second career as an artist, and I’m starting here, at DH Designs.

When I’m not drawing or painting, my wife and I love traveling, exploring different food cultures and visiting various points along the California coastline and beyond.
