Quails are a beloved site, and entertaining to watch, with their bouncing topknot, and small fast-moving legs.
The California Dreaming is a Gamble's quail in graphite. It incorporates one of my favorite art styles – trompe l’oeil - which is the torn paper element which reveals a blackened background behind the quail.
The blurred bubble-like background is my take on bokeh - a Japanese term used in photography that describes a blurred background which allows the intended subject to remain in sharp focus.
