From the Dia de los Muertos series, The Offering honors the people and stories carried forward through family, memory, and celebration.

This colored-pencil drawing was inspired by our family ofrenda and by the pre-Columbian artifacts I saw at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Mixpantli exhibition. At its center is an Aztec-inspired skull, representing the ancient roots of the altar and the endurance of those traditions. A glimpse of Domingo’s guitar honors my wife’s grandfather, whose guitar followed him everywhere. Flowers, papel picado, champurrado, and a candle in a barro holder complete the scene, all illuminated by a warm, candle-lit night.
