California Sister, Adelpha californica — an original color pencil drawing reproduced as a giclée print.
The California Sister takes its name from the bold black and white markings on its forewings, said to resemble a nun’s habit. Larvae feed exclusively on oaks (Quercus spp.), and like the Monarch, both larvae and adults are unpalatable to predators — protected by tannins and other compounds acquired from their host plants. This chemical defense has made the California Sister a model for mimicry, with several other species evolving similar wing patterns to share in its protection.
