The Painted Lady holds the distinction of being the most widespread butterfly species in the world, found on every continent except Antarctica and Australia. A strongly migratory species, individuals fly northward each spring from southern deserts where they overwintered, sometimes traveling thousands of miles. They are remarkably adaptable, with more than 300 recorded host plants — among them thistles, sunflowers, and sagebrush.
